Obama: It doesn’t matter if you’re ‘socialist, communist or capitalist’

In pitching the wonders of a mixed economy that uses bits of socialism and bits of capitalism to a group of students in Argentina Thursday, President Obama said there really is not much difference between the two systems.

“So often in the past there has been a sharp division between left and right, between capitalists and communists or socialists, and especially in the Americas, that’s been a big debate,” Obama said.

“Those are interesting intellectual arguments, but I think for your generation, you should be practical and just choose from what works,” the president said. “You don’t have to worry about whether it neatly fits into socialist theory or capitalist theory. You should just decide what works.”

Obama said Cuba’s socialist system under dictator Raúl Castro, for example, has made “great progress” in providing free access to basic education and health care for every Cuban.

“That’s a huge achievement. They should be congratulated. But, you drive around Havana and you say ‘this economy is not working.’ It looks like it did in the 1950s,” Obama said.

“And so you have to be practical in asking yourself how can you achieve the goals of equality and inclusion but also recognize that the market system produces a lot of wealth and goods and services and innovation.

“So you don’t have to be rigid in saying it’s either this or that, you can say, depending on the problem you are trying to solve, depending on the social issues you’re trying to address, ‘what works?’

Watch Obama’s comments to Argentine students:

Obama concluded that a market-based system makes for a great foundation but the market cannot be allowed to operate “by itself.”

“And I think you’ll find that the most successful societies, the most successful economies are ones that are rooted in a market-based system but also recognize that a market does not work by itself,” he said. “It has to have a social and moral and ethical and community basis, and there has to be inclusion, otherwise it’s not stable. And, it’s up to you, whether you’re in business or academia or nonprofits, whatever, to create new forms that are adaptable to the conditions that we live in today.”

WND recently reported that the Democratic platform actually differs little from that of the Communist Party USA.

When comparing the statements on the CPUSA website to those made by prominent Democrats such as Hillary Clinton on the major issues of the economy, the environment, and their social agenda, it’s hard to tell the difference.

And while Obama praised Cuba’s achievements in education and healthcare while reserving criticism for a communist economy that “doesn’t work,” he forgot to tell the Argentine students that the economy works very well for the Castro family and the favored class of communist elites.

The Castros have amassed billions of dollars while the Cuban people have had their property stolen, their bank accounts pilfered and their country hijacked by dictators who operate like the mafia, say Cuban dissidents who have fled the country.

The Castro regime deals internationally in stolen property, renting and selling vast numbers of estates to wealthy tourists, said Alex Gimenez, 53, whose parents, once upper-middle class Cubans, escaped the island in 1961 with nothing but the shirts on their backs.

Gimenez, chairman of the American Council on Global Affairs, a conservative think tank, said Obama’s relaxing of the embargo against Cuba will not help average Cubans one bit. All the money from business investment and increased tourism will go to the regime, none of it filtering down to the Cubans who work in the hotels and restaurants.

“They are paid by the regime in worthless script, non-convertible pesos that are worthless,” Gimenez said at a recent presentation to the Georgia Tea Party in Marietta, Georgia.

“Cubans are also forbidden from investing in their own country,” Gimenez said.

“Basically you have a regime that is saying ‘we’ll be happy to take your money but we’re not going to change,’” Gimenez said. “Everyone is paid in script and all the real money goes to the Castros. They own yachts, large compounds.”
