The ‘Bern’ gets hotter in West

Hillary - Sanders 600x300

WASHINGTON – It may be too little, too late for socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders to overtake Hillary Clinton’s large delegate lead, but he put more pressure on the Democratic presidential frontrunner Saturday by sweeping all three caucuses in the West.

Sanders won delegate-rich Washington state with 72.7 percent to 27.1 percent on won Alaska by an even more lopsided landslide – 81.6 percent to 18.4. In Hawaii, he was declared the winner leading 70.6 to 29.2 percent.

The huge wins will likely boost the Vermont senator’s fundraising ability as the campaign shifts to California, where he is predicting victory.

There were 101 delegates at stake in Washington state, the big prize in Saturday’s contests. Delegates are awarded proportionately in all three caucuses.

Clinton had maintained a 300-delegate lead going into Saturday.

Sanders is running strong in Wisconsin, a progressive state whose primary is set for April 5. Sanders is also counting on an upset in Hillary Clinton’s home state of New York where the vote is scheduled for April 19.

Sanders told CNN he thinks many of the party’s superdelegates currently pledged to Clinton will switch to his campaign given the new momentum.

“I think the momentum is with us,” Sanders said on CNN’s “State of the Union” with Jake Tapper Sunday. “A lot of these super-delegates may rethink their positions with Secretary Clinton.”
