Trump on Savage to set record straight on National Enquirer scandal

Talk-radio superstar Michael Savage embraced Donald Trump’s campaign early, when his competition was either sitting on the sidelines or backing others.

But then came the National Enquirer scandal story about Ted Cruz.

Something didn’t sit well with Savage, who threatened on the air to withdraw his support for the frontrunner in the GOP presidential sweepstakes.

On Monday, Savage will host an appearance by Trump “to talk about the National Enquirer scandal once and for all.”

Savage has said he’s disgusted that the two leading GOP candidates are spending their time sniping at each other rather than Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.

“I hope to hear directly from Mr. Trump his disavowal of having anything to do with this mudslinging about Ted Cruz’s alleged affairs,” Savage said in a statement to WND. “I want to talk about the 10 big dangers to America of another Clinton presidency. America’s future hangs in the balance. Either we elect a candidate who puts America first or we slide down the socialist path to a weakened, diluted nation, unable to defend itself from enemies external and internal – becoming a big Belgium crying out for someone to save her.”

Savage told his listeners Friday that Trump’s ties to National Enquirer CEO David Pecker raise red flags as to who started rumors claiming Sen. Ted Cruz cheated on his wife, Heidi, with five women. Savage condemned the story saying he knows what it is like to be smeared.

“He should get rid of this connection, because this is not going to help him at all,” he said. “This is utter garbage and Cruz is rightly offended. I’ve supported Trump and probably still will, but if he won’t disavow this guy Pecker and this story, I may withdraw my support from anyone in this campaign. … I am not going to support anyone who engages in assassination by innuendo.”

In response to the story, Ted Cruz said: “Well, David is good friends with Donald Trump. In fact, the National Enquirer has endorsed Donald Trump, has said he must be president … [and] years from now, when my daughters google this, they will read these lies.”

Two of the women named as carrying on affairs with Cruz, his former communications director Amanda Carpenter and Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson, who in 2012 consulted for Cruz’s Senate campaign in Texas, also denied the accusations.

Trump released his own statement denying any involvement on his part in spreading the story.

“I have no idea whether or not the cover story about Ted Cruz in this week’s issue of the National Enquirer is true or not, but I had absolutely nothing to do with it, did not know about it, and have not, as yet, read it,” the statement said. “I have nothing to do with the National Enquirer and unlike Lyin’ Ted Cruz I do not surround myself with political hacks and henchman and then pretend total innocence. Ted Cruz’s problem with the National Enquirer is his and his alone, and while they were right about O.J. Simpson, John Edwards, and many others, I certainly hope they are not right about Lyin’ Ted Cruz. I look forward to spending the week in Wisconsin, winning the Republican nomination and ultimately the presidency in order to Make America Great Again.”
