Councilman’s call to throw rocks at cops sparks firestorm

A firestorm has erupted in Mississippi that goes all the way up to the governor’s office over a city councilman’s comments about throwing rocks.

At police.

According to a report in the Clarion-Ledger, Gov. Phil Bryant has landed on Jackson Councilman Kenneth Stokes’ comments.

He said they are “reprehensible.”

Stokes’ comments at a news conference this week condemned police chases that develop in other jurisdictions and lead into Jackson.

He repeated the statements in a subsequent interview with the Clarion-Ledger.

The newspaper reported he said, “My position is this: When you have these police officers coming from other jurisdictions and they will not respect human life, then I said we should use rocks, bricks or bottles to try to get the message over: stop endangering our children.”

Someone should let Mr. Stokes know throwing rocks, bricks and bottles at police is not a formula for racial healing. Perhaps he should read, “The Antidote: Healing America From the Poison of Hate, Blame, and Victimhood.”

He defended his advocacy for police at the same time, saying, “I have supported police officers in police departments all over this state from when I was a (Hinds County) supervisor when we voted for new cars and equipment for police officer. I opened and closed the last council meeting with an honor of an officer who had died. I have named streets after officers in this city.”

Bryant said the councilman’s remarks “are reprehensible, particularly with the attacks we have seen against our men and women in law enforcement. I condemn any such remarks in the strongest possible manner. This is nothing short of an outright assault upon all who wear the badge.”

He said he’d check with Attorney General Jim Hood to determine whether the remarks “represent criminal threats against law enforcement officers.”

Hood told the newspaper on Saturday, “Frustration or dissatisfaction with police policies or procedures does not give any person, especially an elected official, the right to jeopardize the safety of officers.’

He continued, “We should instead be focused on cooperation and mutual respect between citizens and law enforcement. Certainly, the office of attorney general will investigate any complaint received in this or any other matter.”

Stokes’ comments had included his description as “thugs” those officers who put human lives in jeopardy.

He said he’d been told of a high speed chase on Christmas Eve that led into Jackson.

“These kind of chases put children in danger,” Stokes told the newspaper.
