Texas A&M University gave students the right to conceal carry in class.
Texas A&M University officials cleared the way for concealed carry permit holders to cart their guns into classrooms with “few major restrictions,” according to the new policy.
Chancellor John Sharp and the A&M system’s legal team gave the go-ahead for the policy switch. The only exceptions are certain spots at Prairie View A&M, Texas A&M International University and A&M -Corpus Christi because they “have dorms that are leased by third-party companies,” Breitbart reported, citing the new policy.
The relaxed policy comes as state legislators passed a law giving campuses more leeway in determining carry rights for gun owners.
The state campus carry rule will go into effect on August 1 at universities around Texas, allowing public colleges to decide on whether or not to let guns be carried on their affiliated properties. The law also lets universities set limits on where those guns might be carried. As Breitbart reported, the University of Texas system opened the doors for guns in the classrooms, but not in the dormitories.
“Do I trust my students, faculty and staff to work and live responsibly under the same laws at the university as they do at home? Of course I do,” said Sharp, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.
Texas A&M’s restrictions on gun carry include child care facilities, places for student disciplinary actions and sporting events.
