Immigration officials released thousands of violent criminals into the nation last year

The conservative Center for Immigration Studies says U.S. immigration officials released “deportable criminal aliens from its custody at an alarming rate in 2015,” including some convicted of robbery, rape and murder.

According to government figures analyzed by the organization, Immigration and Customs Enforcement let released 19,723 criminal aliens in the United States over the course of the year. Because the 64,197 convictions shared between the group of illegal immigrants, ICE had the authority to deport the individuals.

DUIs made up the largest portion of the convictions, totaling 12,661. Remarkably, 8,234 of the convictions were for serious violent crimes. ICE released at least 208 convicted murderers and 900 illegal immigrants convicted of sex crimes.

ICE doesn’t seem to see the problem. In fact, the agency is touting the fact that it released around 500 fewer convicted criminals last year than in 2014.

“The lower number of criminals aliens released in fiscal year 2015 can be credited in part to enhanced oversight for custody determinations announced early in 2015 which include stepped-up internal review of such decisions and additional monitoring of criminal aliens released,” an ICE official said earlier this year.

The truth, however, is that ICE actually just caught fewer criminal aliens last year.

President Barack Obama’s blind-eye border policy is largely to blame for ICE’s mass release of criminal aliens in the U.S. And in some cases, criminals were released because of international disagreements and paperwork hurdles.

“In more than 2,166 cases, the criminal alien was released because his/her home country refused to take him/her back. In 89 cases, ICE was unable to obtain a travel document for the alien. In these circumstances, ICE can hold the alien for no longer than 180 days,” the Center for Immigration Studies said.

Nations who refused deportees include: Afghanistan, Algeria, Burundi, Cape Verde, China, Cuba, Eritrea, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, India, Iran, Iraq, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, and Zimbabwe.

And there’s good reason some countries don’t want their violent convicts back.

Via the Center for Immigration Studies: “When ICE releases criminal aliens instead of deporting them, the chances are high that the aliens will re-offend. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, approximately 71 percent of violent offenders, 77 percent of drug offenders, and 82 percent of property offenders will be arrested for a new crime within five years of release from jail or prison.”
