Pragmatists are the new bigots

White people are a pretty crummy bunch.

At least that’s what I gather from the Unofficial Survival Guide published by students at Scripps College in California.

The 217-page book is billed as a by students, for students publication meant to help new arrivals navigate college life.

Compiled by more than 40 students, the guide makes it clear that white students should be comfortable being blamed for racism throughout history and accept that some minorities have the right to hate them.

“Anger is a legitimate response to oppression, as is sadness, fear, frustration, exhaustion, and a general distaste or hatred of white people,” the book says.

White privilege, the guide informs students, is “the set of unearned benefits white people gain as a result of systematic racism and discrimination.” And because of white privilege, even white students who suffer the abuse of “other forms of institutionalized oppression like ableism, classism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia” still don’t have it as badly as minority students.

But, dear young whiteys, you should not dare to try to get a better understanding of where all the hatred is coming from if you are so bold as to be uncomfortable with the idea that people can hate you for simply being born with a certain hue of privilege. That makes you a racist, according to the book.

The authors don’t mince words, relaying that “asking people of color to educate us about racism” is just something “we need to stop doing right now.”

Also, no matter how little sense it may make, it isn’t racist for minorities to hate white people.

Why?

Well, “[r]everse racism cannot exist because white people maintain power over people of color” and “because there are no institutions that were founded with the intention of discriminating against white people on the basis of their skin [color].”

Those, of course, aren’t true statements. But do you really want to drag out the hate facts, you white devils?

If you think these ideas are “insane” or, perhaps, “stupid,” all you’re really doing is “reinforcing [the idea] that mentally ill people shouldn’t be listened to, believed, or valued.”

And surely you can understand why we wouldn’t want to do that.
