Final proof Obama and Holder buried Fast and Furious

Documents released by the House of Representatives this week shed new light on the ATF’s Fast and Furious gun running program that generated intense controversy ahead of the 2012 presidential election. And it’s looking pretty clear that GOP allegations of a cover-up were quite justified.

The documents tell the story of a Justice Department that was keen on ignoring questions about Fast and Furious from the beginning, with top DOJ officials expressing concerns that cooperating with lawmakers would damage the ATF’s credibility.

Lawmakers on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform which led the investigation say there’s now solid proof that DOJ officials:

Presumed that allegations about gunwalking in Arizona were false and refused to adjust when documents and evidence showed otherwise.

Politicized decisions about how and whether to comply with the congressional investigation.

Devised strategies to redact or otherwise withhold relevant information from Congress and the public.

Isolated the fallout from the Fast and Furious scandal to ATF leadership and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona.

Created a culture of animosity towards congressional oversight.

“More than previously understood, the documents show the lengths to which senior Department officials went to keep information from Congress,” said Oversight chair Rep. Jason Chaffetz. “Further, the documents reveal how senior Justice Department officials—including Attorney General Eric Holder—intensely followed and managed an effort to carefully limit and obstruct the information produced to Congress.”

In one 2011 email, Deputy Assistant Attorney General Jason Weinstein advises that the ATF “can and should strongly refute” any claims that DOJ officials allowed guns to flow illegally into Mexico.

In other woods, just over a year after an ATF gun was used to murder  Border Patrol agent Brian Terry in December 2010 the DOJ consensus was that lying outright was better for its credibility than admitting its illegal mistake.

In other exchanges, top DOJ officials discussed how cooperating with congressional investigations into the fatally-flawed gunwalking program would be a “very bad idea” because it would set a “precedent” for DOJ cooperation in the future.

At another point, a DOJ official applauded the National Rifle Association’s calls for lawmakers to dig deeper, writing: “Chutzpah. The NRA’s now-public involvement in this may be useful in convincing reporters this is part of the overall effort to discredit ATF.”

Unbelievable.
