Protests have taken over Capitol Hill.
More than a thousand people, including the two co-founders of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, have been arrested in a week-long pro-democracy demonstration that’s taken over parts of Capitol Hill.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, meanwhile, took time away from his presidential run to express his solidarity with the demonstrators, saying: “Americans understand that our gov’t is dominated by big money. Glad to see people taking action to restore democracy.”
Police said 1,240 were arrested in the last seven days, including 300 on Monday alone who were clogging up the Capitol’s steps to the Rotunda, the Hill reported.
Demonstrators and organizers say at least 1,300 have been arrested, however.
Most have been charged with crowding and obstruction. A few days ago, a dozen were arrested for tying themselves to scaffolding in the Rotunda.
And among the jailed: Actress Rosario Dawson; staffers for the Progressive Change Campaign Committee; and top officials with the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, the NAACP and the AFL-CIO.
Democracy Spring, the group in charge of the protests, is pressing Congress to pass campaign finance reform and voter registration changes. The group’s also demanding Congress consider President Obama’s choice for the Supreme Court seat vacated by Justice Antonin Scalia’s sudden death.
