Ben Carson talks about Harriet Tubman gets slammed as Uncle Tom

Remarking on the Treasury Department’s decision to replace Andrew Jackson with Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill recently earned black conservative Ben Carson a flood of leftist hate. His crime? Failing to mindlessly fawn over the shifting face of American currency.

During an interview on Fox, Carson lamented the decision to remove Jackson from the $20, saying he was a “tremendous” president. He also pointed out a subtle irony.

“Andrew Jackson was the last president who actually balanced the federal budget, where we had no national debt,” Carson said.

“In honor of that we kick him off of the money,” he added.

Carson added that he has nothing but respect for Tubman, the well-known Underground Railroad conductor who helped hundreds of slaves to freedom. But the former presidential candidate said he feels the nation should find another way to honor her memory.

“I love Harriet Tubman. I love what she did, but we can find another way to honor her. Maybe a $2 bill,” Carson said.

The left took the remark as a slight to the famous abolitionist and quickly attacked.

Here’s a selection of some of the abuse hurled at Carson via Twitter:

• “y’all HEAR what Ben Carson said about Tubman on the $20?! He said he loves her but she should be on the $2 bill. SHUT YO UNCLE TOM AHH UP”
• “Your boy Ben Carson suggests Harriett Tubman go on the $2 bill Can we suggest he goes on the $3 bill perhaps rotating with Kinko the Clown”
• “A brain surgeon, it’s safe to say, is considered SMART. It’s been shown some SMART people are Peculiar(Nuts). IMO Dr Carson is BOTH”

In a later interview, Carson explained that he really didn’t see what all the fuss was about.

“The point being we have lots of options here. We can have a $200 bill, but, you know, Andrew Jackson was the last president who actually eliminated the national debt. That’s no small feat here,” he said.

In other words, he wasn’t saying Tubman should be placed on a bill of lesser value– just that the $20 isn’t the only option.

He went on to make another good point, saying, “We have lots of possibilities, all kinds of things we can do. But, you know, as you can imagine, there will come a time when we won’t have currency at all. I don’t think it’s all that far into the future.”
