A Secret Service agent who was on administrative leave for allegedly trying to break into his ex-girlfriend’s house was shot and killed in the street in downtown Washington, D.C.

“Secret Service is aware of the information,” the agency said in a statement reported by the New York Post. “We express condolences to the family of our employee.”

Arthur Baldwin, 30, was a member of the Secret Service’s Uniformed Division. He was shot several times, and pronounced dead at an area hospital, police said, Fox 5 DC reported.

Authorities are investigating the incident as a homicide stemming from a possible robbery and have offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects. They are seeking three men who fled the scene after the incident, the New York Daily News reported.

Just recently, Baldwin faced first-degree burglary and destruction of property charges for an April incident in which he kicked at the front door of his ex-girlfriend’s apartment, trying to break in, authorities said. The Washington Post reported the assault left the door with dents and broken hinges, and two windows were shattered. The woman was described in court documents as appearing “to be in fear of her life,” the New York Post said. And a short time later, Baldwin, dressed in full uniform, went back to her apartment, where an officer confiscated his service weapon. The Washington Post said Baldwin admitted kicking in the door and was shortly after placed on administrative leave. Secret Service officials also yanked his security clearance.

Baldwin’s trial for that incident had been set for February 29.

But the woman who was named as the victim in the case said she didn’t want to see Baldwin prosecuted. She said to WJLA-TV that she had planned to testify on his behalf at the trial.

“He was a good man, an amazing person,” she said to the news outlet, about his shooting death. “He didn’t deserve that. He never had a beef with anybody. All he did was work and take care of his kids.”
