Is Donald Trump really Biff from “Back to the Future?”
The publisher of New Hampshire’s mid-size Union Leader newspaper filled out his editorial page this week with a vicious attack of the GOP presidential front-runner, calling the billionaire candidate a “crude blowhard” with little to offer the country, and comparing him to loudmouth bully Biff Tannen played by actor Tom Wilson in the “Back to the Future” comedy films.
“Trump can certainly be an entertaining character,” publisher Joseph McQuaid wrote. “He toys with TV journalists and dismisses critics with name-calling that drives the Politically Correct crowd insane. But his public descent into bathroom humor and verbal bullying has been painful, and educational, to watch.”
McQuaid then lashes at Trump as a complete buffoon, unworthy of American voter attention, by referencing the candidate’s recent criticisms of Sen. John McCain’s prisoner-of-war record and former Hewlett-Packard CEO and fellow presidential hopeful Carly Fiorina’s face.
“Trump has shown himself to be a crude blowhard with no clear political philosophy and no deeper understanding of the important and serious role of [p]resident of the United States than one of the goons he lets rough up protesters in his crowds,” he wrote. “He reminds us of the grownup bully ‘Biff’ in the ‘Back to the Future’ movie series.”
He then writes: “Lo and behold, the screenwriter says that he based Biff on Trump.”
McQuaid calls on fellow New Hampshire residents to do the right thing – to send Trump packing.
“On Feb. 9, we trust New Hampshire Republicans will send ‘Biff Trump’ back to somewhere – anywhere but on the road to the most important elective office in the United States at a most crucial time for this nation.”
The newspaper has seen a long history of blasting political candidates, particularly with front-page editorials.
The New England Historical Society reported William Loeb, the influential publisher of the then-called Manchester Union Leader between 1946 and 1981, when he died, once slammed Nelson Rockefeller, then-governor, as a “wife-swapper.” The characterization helped sidelined Rockefeller’s run for the presidency in the 1968 New Hampshire primary.
Loeb also wrote of President Eisenhower as someone who “has done more to destroy the respect, honor and power of the United States than any president it its history,” the New England Historical Society wrote.
And in one other headline, Loeb wrote, “Jerry is a Jerk,” in reference to Gerald Ford.
Loeb also is pointed to as the reason for Sen. Edmund Muskie’s failed bid to the presidency in 1972, because he published a forged letter that accused Muskie of using the derogatory term of “Canuck” to describe French Canadians. Muskie hit back with a speech in front of the newspaper’s offices that didn’t go over well with the public. As the Historical Society reported, critics dubbed it the “crying speech” after Muskie broke into emotional displays at least three times during delivery.

Muskie tried to ward off the criticism by saying the tears were melted snow.
Loeb, meanwhile, earned the moniker “Mr. Low Ebb” from his detractors.
McQuaid’s criticisms of Trump come as Real Clear Politics’s polling data, from four separate organizations, put him in the lead in New Hampshire. ARG shows him with a 6-point lead; CBS News/YouGov, with an 18-point lead; the Boston Herald, with a 14-point lead; and WBUR/MassINC, with a 15-point lead. The varying polls were conducted between Dec. 6 and Dec. 20.
