Putin vows Russia will develop nuclear weapons

Vladimir Putin said as long as he presides over Russia, the country will continue to develop its nuclear weapon arms program, as part and parcel of regular military operations.

“Russia as a leading nuclear country will be improving this weapon as a containment factor,” he said, during an interview for a documentary called “World Order” that just aired, the Associated Press reported. “The nuclear triad is the basis of our nuclear security policies.”

He then referred to the continued development of the three main delivery systems for nuclear warheads: bombers, the intercontinental ballistic missile system and submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Putin also vowed the nation would never use the weapons as an act of aggression against other countries, AP reported.

“We have never brandished or will brandish this nuclear club, but out military doctrine allocates it a place and role,” Putin said, in the Russia-run news agency Tass reported.
