Immigration authorities arrested 244 illegal immigrants.

Immigration authorities arrested 244 illegal immigrants.

More than half of the 244 who were arrested already had felony convictions, authorities said, the Associated Press reported. The other half had multiple misdemeanor offenses in their pasts.

ICE said those arrested would either face criminal prosecution or deportation hearings.

Most of the illegals hailed from Mexico – eight in 10, ICE reported. And most of the arrests, 99 of them, came in Los Angeles County. Another 55 were picked up in Orange County; 43 in San Bernardino; 24 in Riverside; 20 in Santa Barbara and three in San Luis Obispo, AP reported.

The arrests come just weeks after Kate Steinle, 32, was shot and killed while walking a pier in San Francisco with her father. The suspect is an illegal immigrant with a criminal background who had been deported several times, and who told police he was in the county because it was a safe haven community and he knew he wouldn’t be deported.

ICE removed 102,224 illegals from San Francisco in fiscal 2014, which was a 24 percent drop from firscal 2013, AP reported. And part of the reason for the decline? ICE said local law enforcement officials simply refused to detain suspects but rather let them go back into the community.
