Edward Snowden of NSA whistleblowing fame – who brought to light shocking details of the U.S. government’s surveillance of American citizens, and who then fled overseas to avoid prosecution – is now on Twitter.
He bills himself in his bio as “I used to work for the government. Now I work for the public. Director at @FreedomofPress.”
And in his first message as @Snowden that soon went viral, he wrote: “Can you hear me now?”
Within hours, his message received nearly 95,000 retweets and more than 85,000 favorites. And after just a few tweets, he’s already garnered 913,000-plus followers.
At the same time, Snowden’s only following one – the National Security Agency/Central Security Service, which describes itself on Twitter as “home to America’s codemakers and codebreakers.”
Among Snowden’s first tweeted messages: “Stay free.”
He also wrote: “Hero, traitor – I’m just a citizen with a voice.”
And warned: “Surveillance never sleeps and secret projects @FreedomofPress are keeping me busy, but I still find time for cat pictures.”
Fox News reported efforts are underway by government authorities to shut down his Twitter account.
Snowden caused a stir among U.S. national security authorities and government officials in 2013 when he leaked information he collected while serving as a contractor with the NSA. He’s since fled to Russia, and U.S. authorities have been trying to bring him to America to prosecute him for espionage.
