A woman in Massachusetts pleaded guilty to fraud in U.S. District Court in Worcester after federal prosecutors said she scammed taxpayers out of $3.6 million in food-stamp revenues.
Vida Ofori Causey, who owns a convenience store, pleaded guilty to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, fraud between the years of 2010 and 2014.
“Causey purchased the benefits [from recipients] at a discounted value of approximately 50 cents for every SNAP dollar,” the Department of Justice reported on a press release. “By so doing, Causey caused the USDA to electronically deposit into a bank account controlled by her the full face value of the SNAP benefits fraudulently obtained.”
SNAP recipients benefited from the scam because they received cash from Causey and were then able to purchase items restricted by the program, like cigarettes and alcohol.
Federal prosecutors said she stole approximately $3.64 million from SNAP.
The food stamp program, administered by the USDA, has grown from 17 million participants in 2000 to almost 47 million in 2014.
