Illegal immigration a serious problem, says American majority

Jeb Bush thinks illegal immigration is an “act of love,” but a firm majority of Americans believe letting it continue at current levels in the U.S. would be a major act of stupidity.

According to new numbers out from Rasmussen, 80 percent of likely American voters believe that illegal immigration is a serious problem that the country must address. That’s compared to just 20 percent who don’t consider the tide of illegal immigrants entering the country a big deal.

When asked what the nation should do about the illegal immigration problem, most likely voters prefer a strategy that falls more in line with Donald Trump’s than Bush’s compassion.

Fifty-eight percent of respondents said that government should forget about amnesty for illegals already in the country until it figures out how to take control of the county’s southern border. Among Republicans, the number jumps to 84 percent.

Fifty-seven percent of likely voters support placing the U.S. military along the border to dissuade illegal immigrants from sneaking into the country.

A majority of voters from both parties (48 percent) also believes that a pathway to citizenship will worsen the immigration problem by encouraging more people to enter the country illegally. Thirty-two percent disagree, and 10 percent were undecided.

Trump’s bravado has forced the GOP establishment into a debate on illegal immigration that the party’s leadership had hoped to avoid.

The businessman has been particularly critical of Bush’s immigration viewpoints.

“You know, he puts out a report saying do not use the term ‘anchor baby,’ ” Trump recently said, noting a Bush flip-flop. “Then I used it, my polls go through the room, and now he’s using ‘anchor baby,’ and he’s taking criticism.”

Trump has suggested that Bush’s wife, who is from Mexico, is influencing the former Florida governor’s position on immigration.

“I mean, look, I would say that he would,” he said on CNN last month. “If my wife were from Mexico, I think I would have a soft spot for people from Mexico.”
