Republicans on Capitol Hill sent a 30-page letter to President Obama calling for him to fire IRS Commissioner John Koskinen because of alleged lies he told Congress during recent hearings.
“Mr. Koskinen failed to testify truthfully,” said Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz, speaking of the pressing of his panel to bring contempt or impeachment charges against Koskinen, the Hill reported. “The statements he made to Congress were false. And there are consequences for misleading Congress.”
The letter to Obama, which lays out the case against Koskinen, comes on the heels of a report from the Treasury’s inspector general for tax administration that found the IRS’s handling of Lois Lerner emails tied to the agency’s tea party targeting scandal was less than honest. The IRS, two-plus years ago, admitted it dealt with the tax exempt applications of tea party groups in an improper way. But Chaffetz and his Republican colleagues allege the IRS obstructed their investigation into the matter, in part, by failing to comply with subpoenas.
Koskinen took over the leadership role at the IRS in 2013, about six months after news broke of the agency’s inappropriate handling of tea party applications. He vowed at the time to restore integrity to the agency.
Since, the IRS has denied the ability to find several emails tied to the Lerner scandal.
“Koskinen failed in every single duty he had,” said Rep. Jim Jordan, the Hill reported.
The IRS, for its part, maintained “the record is clear” Koskinen has cooperated with congressional investigators.
