The University of New Hampshire has sent out a “Bias-Free Language Guide” that advises against using the word “American,” labeling it “problematic.”
Why?
“North Americans often use ‘American’ which usually, depending on the context, fails to recognize South America,” the guide stated. “‘American’ assumes the U.S. is the only country inside these two continents.”
Instead, campus-goers ought to use such phrases as “U.S. citizen,” or “resident of the U.S.,” or the more specific, “North American or South American,” the College Fix found.
But the politically correct censorship goes deeper.
Campus Reform found the guide suggested other changes, to include the phrase “other sex” for “opposite sex;” “non-disabled” for “normal;” “gay, lesbian, same-gender loving” for “homosexual;” “nurturing, parenting,” for “mothering, fathering;” and “people of size” for “obese, overweight people.”
Campus officials say the guide will help foster relationships.
“We offer this guide as a way to promote discussion and to facilitate creative and accurate expression,” the campus said in a statement reported by the College Fix. “An integral part of UNH’s mission is to continue to build an inclusive learning community, and the first step toward our goal is an awareness of any bias in our daily language.”
