Lawmaker: Fire chief who released Duggar report

Bart Hester, a Republican state senator in Arkansas, called for the firing of the police chief who released the report about Josh Duggar’s molestations.

Since the release of the 2006 report – which came after In Touch magazine made a Freedom of Information Act request – Duggar has admitted he sexually touched several girls, including his sisters, while he was a minor-age child.

Now Hester wants police Chief Kathy O’Kelley fired, calling her decision to release the information “reckless and irresponsible” and damaging to the victims.

“The law to protect minors’ identities is not a suggestion. So sad to see the person charged with protecting the community being so reckless and irresponsible. I believe it is unavoidable that the Springdale police chief should be terminated,” he said, 5 News reported.

O’Kelley released the report just weeks after she announced her retirement this June.

Local media reported Springdal Mayor Doug Sprouse said O’Kelley and City Attorney Ernest Cate consulted before deciding to release the report.

“From every indication I have the chief and city attorney reluctantly did what they had to do to comply with the state FOI law,” Sprouse said.

In Touch posted the report on its website. Washington County Juvenile Judge Stacey Zimmerman, meanwhile, ordered police to destroy the document and to expunge Duggar’s name from the public record.

Duggar’s statement on his family’s Facebook page expressed remorse.

“Twelve years ago, as a young teenager, I acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret,” he wrote. “I hurt others, including my family and close friends.”

Duggar resigned from his position at Family Research Council shortly after the report was made public.
