Sen. Ted Cruz, who recently announced a run for the White House in 2016, said President Obama has missed many chances to serve as a unifying force on the racial front, and has instead torn the country apart.
Cruz made the comments while weighing in on Baltimore and the unrest that’s coursed through the city in recent days, leaving 20 or so police officers injured and more than 200 arrested. The violence has come on the heels of the death of Freddie Gray, who was taken into police custody and days later, died with several spinal injuries.
Protesters see Gray’s death as yet another case of police brutality, and they’ve been taking their outrages to the streets in Baltimore and, more recently, cities like Boston, Denver, Philadelphia, New York City and Washington, D.C. More than 100 were arrested in protests around the nation Wednesday night.
Cruz said Obama could have done a lot to defray these tensions, but chose not to, Mediaite reported.
“He’s made decision,” he said, “that I think have inflamed racial tensions, that have divided us rather than bringing us together.”
Cruz also chastised those who automatically expressed “animosity” to police before knowing the full details of certain situations, like the Gray apprehension, and said law enforcement as a whole shouldn’t be under attack because of a few “bad actors.”
The Texas Republican added: America deserves a president who’s “working to appeal to our shared values.”
He made the remarks at the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, where he called the death of Gray “heartbreaking” and the ensuing confusion about his arrest worthy of deeper investigation.
