Ferguson police defend their city from protesters.

At least two people were shot in Ferguson, Missouri, as the protests over Freddie Gray’s death spread from Baltimore to points west.

Gray died shortly after being taken into police custody and receiving massive spinal injuries.

The two shot in Ferguson, the city where the “hands up, don’t shoot” mantra developed in the wake of a police shooting of a black resident, Michael Brown, 18, haven’t been identified. And police are finding it hard to investigate, CNN reported.

“Police are having a difficult time investigating because of the rocks being thrown at them,” said Jeff Small, a spokesperson for the Ferguson government, CNN reported. “At this point, police are not sure if the [shootings are] linked to the protest or not.”

Protests have sprung around the nation in the days following Gray’s death. More are expected as the medical examiner’s report is due to be released Friday, along with Baltimore’s announcement about what could happen to the police who took Gray into custody.
