Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who’s due to make an announcement about a possible presidential run next week, told a largely Hispanic crowd the Supreme Court may find in favor of “gay” marriage, but justices don’t make the rules: God does, he said.
Huckabee’s speech to the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, which CNN reported as well-received, came just hours after the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments about states’ rights regarding same-sex marriage. The justices’ decision is due in June, but in the meantime, Huckabee reminded God, not government and courts, is the source in charge.
“I respect the courts,” he said, CNN reported. “But the Supreme Court is only that – the supreme of the courts. It is not the supreme being. I cannot overrule God. When it comees to prayer, when it comes to life and when it comes to the sanctity of marriage, the court cannot change what God has created.”
Huckabee, who won the Iowa caucuses in 2008, fueled in part by the Christian conservative base, will announce his presidential plans Tuesday in Hope, Arkansas. In the meantime, he’s been making public appearances to weigh in on cultural and political events of significant concern – and as a former Baptist pastor, has taken on the gay rights movement as a particular cause of concern.
To the NHCLC crowd, he affirmed his belief Christian business owners are being “criminalized” when they refuse to take part in gay weddings and warned: “Our country’s in trouble because we lost our landmarks of faith.”

In a lighter moment, Huckabee also mentioned his inability to speak Spanish and emphasized instead what he called their shared language.
“I do not come to you tonight with the ability to speak Spanish,” he said. “But I do speak a common language: I speak Jesus.”
