Rubio to Obama: ‘Walk away’ from Iran talks

Sen. Marco Rubio, one of the leading Republican candidates for the 2016 race to the White House, sent a stern message President Obama’s way about Iran, telling the White House chief he ought to stand down on nuclear talks – that it appeared to the casual observer he hardly held America’s interests as top priority.

“If the president were serious about negotiating a deal that advances our security and protects our allies, such as Israel, he would walk away from the table and impose new sanctions on Iran until the regime comes to the table ready to negotiate seriously,” Rubio said, in a statement reported by the Hill.

Rubio’s remarks came just as State Department spokesperson Marie Harf announced the United States was extending its deadline to strike a nuke deal with Iran from June 30 to July 7.

Obama told America in a widely publicized statement he wouldn’t hesistate to “walk away from the negotiations if, in fact, it is a bad deal.” And Rubio picked up on that theme, telling the president: It is.

Even without knowing the full terms of the agreement, Rubio said he could tell it was “not in the interests of the United States,” he said, the Hill reported.

And Rubio’s hardly alone in that view.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in an op-ed for Politico that “entering into a bad agreement with Iran now would only make” matters worse for the United States, particularly in terms of trading relief from sanctions for Tehran’s guarantee of nuclear limits.

Sen. Mark Kirk, meanwhile, said the White House ought to “have the courage to walk away from a bad nuclear deal” that doesn’t even meet the “minimum standards” of security for the West.

And Sen. Bob Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, raised a red flag about the concessions America was making on nuke talks with Iran, saying in a letter to Obama: “It is breathtaking to see how far from your original goals and statements the P5+1 have come during negotiations with Iran.”

He went on, speaking of the shift from a 20-year agreement to a 10-year one, and the seeming relent to let Tehran develop ballistic missiles: “I understand the dynamics that can develop when a group believes they are close to a deal and how your aides may view this as a major legacy accomplishment. However, as you know, the stakes here are incredibly high and the security implications of these negotiations are difficult to overstate. … Please pause and consider rethinking the entire approach.”
