Hollywood heavyweight Jim Carrey took to Twitter to announce his opinion of California’s newest law regarding mandatory vaccinations, calling out the governor’s support for such mandates as antithetical to American values.
“California Gov says yes to poisoning more children with mercury and aluminum in manditory [sic] vaccines,” Carrey wrote. “This corporate fascist must be stopped.”
His harsh criticisms come as California just passed into law – via Gov. Jerry Brown’s signature – an end to religious exemptions to public school-vaccination requirements.
The actor, 53, insisted in a series of tweets that he wasn’t anti-vaccine, but instead “anti-thimerosal, anti-mercury.”
Under the newly passed law, residents who send their children to public schools must abide by vaccination regulations, and can’t opt-out due to personal or religious beliefs. Those who don’t want to vaccinate their children must enroll them in private schools or homeschool them.
The controversial law, arising partly from concerns over this year’s measles outbreak linked to a foreign visitor to Disneyland, would allow only medical exemptions deemed appropriate by the State Department of Public Health, according to a legislative summary.
Carrey has 14.7 million Twitter followers and his angry rant was retweeted and favorited thousands of times.
Carrey first became vocal about vaccines during his relationship with actress Jenny McCarthy, who believes her son’s autism was caused by vaccines.
