Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who’s running in the middle of the polling pack of Republican hopefuls for president, dug in Tuesday on comments he made about the White House marching Israelis “to the door of the oven” with the recently forged Iran nuclear deal, saying strong words are needed to counter those who make blunt threats.
“We need to use strong words when people make strong threats against an entire group of people, as the Iranians have made toward the Jews,” Huckabee said, during an interview on “today” on NBC.
He also said most in the Jewish community have either thanked or supported him for his statements.
“The one thing I am absolutely assured of is that for 6,000 years, Jews have been hunted down and the last time the world did not take seriously threats against the Jewish people, just before World War II, this ended up in the murder of 6 million Jews,” he said.
Huckabee, who said he’s been to Auschwitz three times and Israel dozens more, started a national discussion over his calling of President Obama “naive” for the deal his White House forged with Iran.
Among the comments that were seen as most controversial, as WND reported: “[Obama] will take the Israelis and march them to the door of the oven.”
Israeli Transport Minister Yisrael Katz pushed back against Huckabee’s remarks in a Facebook post that read: “Dear Mr. Huckabee, no one is marching Jews to the ovens anymore. That is why we established the State of Israel and the Israel Defense Forces, and if necessary, we will know how to defend ourselves by ourselves.”
