An audible alarm prompted police in the District of Columbia to evacuate the U.S. Capitol and visitor’s center Tuesday.

Police didn’t elaborate on their evacuation order, saying only it was an emergency, the Associated Press reported.

In a message to congressional offices, law enforcement officials said: “An evacuation has been ordered for U.S. Capitol Visitor Center due to an audible alarm. Remain calm and move in a safe manner to the exits.”

Roll Call’s reporter, Hannah Hess, sent out a Twitter message shortly after, saying: “Capitol Police spokeswoman confirms cops & DC Fire are continuing to investigate the cause of an audible alarm. No signs of smoke or fire,” the Blaze reported.

Hundreds of tourists rushed from the Capitol into the streets.

The red flag comes a day after several airports were subjected to threats of chemical weapons aboard incoming craft, none of which proved true.
