Election results: Trump battles Hillary for president

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton

As Americans head to the polls to elect the nation’s next president, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are now locked in dead heat and fighting a fierce election battle in the final hours of the 2016 race for the White House.

Trump, the billionaire Republican nominee who has inspired a populist grassroots movement, continued to enjoy some momentum in the polls. But Hillary still held a razor-thin lead in the popular vote – so close that she canceled her planned Election Night fireworks display.

By Tuesday evening, RealClearPolitics’ polling average had Hillary up by more than three points, 46.8 percent to 43.6 percent. The site’s electoral map showed Hillary with 203 electoral votes and Trump with 164. An additional 171 “toss-ups” were up for grabs. To win the White House, a candidate must secure at least 270 electoral votes.

white-house-TWHillary has been steadily sinking in the polls since late October as the FBI investigates her use of a private, unsecured email server and mishandling of thousands of classified documents while she was secretary of state. Just 11 days before Election Day, FBI Director James Comey announced the agency was reopening its investigation after it had learned of the existence of 650,000 emails “that appear pertinent to the investigation.” But on Nov. 6, two days before Election Day, Comey told lawmakers he has no plans to indict Hillary.

Upon hearing the latest news, Trump blasted Comey’s latest announcement, telling a Michigan crowd, “The rank-and-file special agents in the FBI won’t let her get away with her terrible crimes – including the deletion of 33,000 emails after receiving a congressional subpoena. Right now she’s being protected by a rigged system! You can’t review 650,000 new emails in eight days. You can’t do it, folks!”

Trump added, “Hillary Clinton is guilty. She knows it, the FBI knows it, the people know it. And now it’s up to the American people to deliver justice at the ballot box on Nov. 8.”

What do YOU think? For whom are you voting for president? Sound off in today’s WND poll

As WND reported, if Hillary wins the election, a prominent Republican member of the House Judiciary Committee says there will be an immediate move to impeach her before she can even be sworn into office on Jan. 20. Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, told WND he has spent the last week ensuring Congress has secured all of the hundreds of thousands of emails examined by the FBI and has confidence the House could impeach her. “Don’t think that Hillary Clinton has been declared innocent on the email scandal just yet,” he said. “This is not over yet.”

In other election news, President Obama appeared to encourage illegal aliens to vote, promising no repercussions if they do.

In an interview with the Latin-oriented YouTube channel mitu, millennial actress Gina Rodriguez asked Obama: “Many of the millennials, Dreamers, undocumented citizens – and I call them citizens because they contribute to this country – are fearful of voting. So if I vote, will Immigration know where I live? Will they come for my family and deport us?”

Obama responded: “Not true, and the reason is, first of all, when you vote, you are a citizen yourself. And there is not a situation where the voting rolls somehow are transferred over and people start investigating, etc. The sanctity of the vote is strictly confidential.”

Newly released exit polls show American voters of every political stripe say the most important quality they want in a president is a “strong leader” (36 percent), according to a Morning Consult/Politico survey conducted Oct. 18-Nov. 8 among 6,782 early/Election Day voters. An additional 29 percent said the president must have a vision for the future. Sixteen percent said the candidate should share their values and care about people like them.

According to Fox News exit polls, Trump beats Hillary 48-46 percent on the issue of the economy. Asked who would make a better commander in chief, 49 percent chose Hillary, and 46 percent said Trump.

A Reuters/Ipsos national Election Day poll of 10,604 voters who cast their ballots in the presidential election in all 50 states showed:

  • 76 percent of respondents believe “the mainstream media is more interested in making money than telling the truth.”
  • 75 percent agreed that “America needs a strong leader to take the country back from the rich and powerful.”
  • 72 percent agreed that “the American economy is rigged to advantage the rich and powerful.”
  • 68 percent agreed that “traditional parties and politicians don’t care about people like me.”
  • 57 percent agreed that “more and more, I don’t identify with what America has become.”
  • 54 percent agreed that “it is increasingly hard for someone like me to get ahead in America.”

As of Tuesday, RealClearPolitics listed the following battleground states as “toss-ups”: Florida (29 delegates), Ohio (18), Michigan (16), Pennsylvania (20), New Hampshire (4), Maine (4), North Carolina (15), Virginia (13), Georgia (16), Colorado (9), Nevada (6), New Mexico (5), Arizona (11) and Iowa (6).

Trump’s campaign is asking voters who encounter problems casting a ballot or who witness disruptions at a polling location to call its voter assistance hotline at (844) 332-2016 or report the incidents online through the Trump campaign’s election issue report form.

The following is the current map, based on incoming results. WND is declining to participate in the mainstream media’s color coup, where outlets define Republicans in red and Democrats in blue. Historically, it was the Republican Party profiled in blue, and the Democrats in red, a standard confirmed by even the New York Times, “in line with European associations (red is used for left-leaning parties),” according to an online report. It is this standard WND is utilizing.
