Former Congressman Ron Paul contends that Donald Trump’s unwillingness to drag the U.S. into more unwinnable military misadventures may not mean a thing due to “shadow government” meddling.
Trump won the support of many voters with campaign promises to maintain a strong military while resisting the neocon urge to drag the U.S. into conflicts it has no business fighting. He repeatedly criticized the Bush administration’s Iraq War and various undeclared military interventions carried out by the Obama administration.
But Paul, whose political career was partly defined by similar anti-interventionist sentiment, warned in a recent interview that Trump may not have much control over the nation’s foreign policy if neocons have their say.
“I don’t how anybody can say they know what is going to happen,” he told The Daily Caller.
The longtime lawmaker added: “All we need is a false flag and an accident and everybody will be for teaching them a lesson.”
Paul’s remarks almost suggest that he expects Trump’s administration to deal with a 9/11 moment.
“The neocons always talked about it before 9/11 they kept saying, ‘we aren’t going to get our program in until we have a Pearl Harbor event,’” he said. “I don’t think there’s proof that they did it.”
Though he stopped short of suggesting that U.S. operatives would organize a false flag, Paul said it’s possible that other countries could create false conflicts aimed at dragging the U.S. into war.
“[T]he deep state is very very powerful and they have a lot of control,” Paul said. “That is one of my big issues about how shadow government is so powerful in all administrations. I would say they should be talking about the CIA.”
