U.S. House of Representatives
WASHINGTON – The earliest results show Democrats taking a slim lead in the race to control the House of Representatives.
The Associated Press has Democrats winning 15 seats, and Republicans winning 12.
Critically important to the new president, whoever he or she is, will be which party controls the two branches of Congress.
Perhaps the least likely outcome tonight would be Republicans losing their majority in the House, which they have held firmly since the tea party revolt against big government in the 2012 midterm elections.
Republicans currently have a 33 seat majority in the House, by a count of 234 to 201.
A President Trump likely would need the GOP to keep control of the House and the Senate to keep his vow to quickly reverse many of Obama’s policies.
A President Clinton would need control of Congress not just to try to pass legislation, but to avoid any impeachment proceedings that may arise from her ongoing scandals, in particular, the year-long FBI investigation into her foundation that is still continuing.
Democrats do not expect to gain much ground in Congress, after all the furor surrounding Clinton’s scandals.
FBI director James Comey did claim for a second time on Sunday that Clinton should not be prosecuted for her use of a private email server as secretary of state.
But, with his announcement coming just two days before the election, a Democratic aide told Reuters, “It’s terribly damaging to us.”
The aide still hopes Democrats could pick up 12 to 16 House seats, but saw little prospect of gaining enough to win control.
