American Conservative Union: Mike Pence would be the most conservative VP in decades

Republican voters put off by GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump’s lack of conservative bona fides will want to pay careful attention to the vice presidential debate Tuesday. The American Conservative Union has named Trump’s running mate, Mike Pence, the “most conservative” VP candidate in 50 years.

The Indiana governor and former House leader sharing the ticket with Trump is in “99 percent alignment” with the ACU’s conservative values, according to the organization.

ACU grades local, state and federal elected officials for conservativism on a scale of zero to 99, meaning Pence is the organization’s idea of a perfect conservative politician.

In fact, other respectably conservative GOP vice presidential picks from recent decades aren’t even close to achieving the amount of ACU approval Pence has garnered.

Here is how some of the others have stacked up over the years:

  • Dick Cheney, 90.8
  • Jack Kemp, 88.8
  • Paul Ryan, 88.6
  • Bob Dole, 82.4
  • Dan Quayle, 80.3
  • Gerald Ford, 64.0

Sharply contrasting Pence’s perfect mark, ACU assigned Hillary Clinton running mate Tim Kaine a rating of 0 percent rating when it comes to conservative issues.

According to ACU, that puts the Virginia senator to the left of Clinton (8 percent), Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders (6 percent) and President Obama (10 percent).

“He led the effort to bust the budget caps, voted to discriminate against faith-based organizations, refused to help the Kurds fight against ISIS, voted against the wildly popular 20-week pain-capable bill, stripped Congressional oversight of EPA regulations, voted for the Solyndra program over infrastructure needs, voted to increase taxes at every turn, voted to make it easier to ship terrorists out of Guantanamo and put them back on the battlefield,” ACU executive director Dan Schneider said, according to the Daily Caller. “Liberals may approve of these votes, but regular Americans do not.”

See the contrast between the two candidates as they square off in the only scheduled vice presidential debate scheduled tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 9 p.m. EST. The debate will be broadcast on all major television networks and cable channels as well as C-SPAN.
