Welcome to the United States of Deplorables

The pundits and the pollsters continue to express disbelief that they didn’t see Donald Trump’s victory coming. But the U.S. has been turning increasingly red for years— they just never left their liberal bubbles long enough to see it.

Here are a couple of New York Times graphics that make the picture pretty clear.

First, in 2016, more than 60 percent of voters live in an area that is solidly conservative:

Next, here’s growth in GOP support since 1992:

Notice anything?

While red areas on the map have grown universally throughout the nation, the blue areas that have expanded are far more interesting.

That’s because they reveal very clearly the nasty trick the Democratic Party has played on its most vulnerable supporters. Support for Democrats only grew in the nation’s poorest regions. There are, of course, the usual metropolitan liberal strongholds…

But overall, it’s the poorest regions that grew in Democratic support.

Check out this map from Poverty USA:

You may also notice something else about the areas in question: They’re minority heavy.

Here’s a racial demographic map from the Cooper Center:

race

And guess what… American minorities have grown poorer after 8 years of Democratic control of the White House.

That’s why Democrats tried so hard to make the election about race and Trump’s alleged racism… They sure as hell couldn’t have grown support in poor, minority regions by talking about the economic improvements they’ve led.

Now, look at other lower income areas that were formerly Democratic strongholds; pay special attention to those areas in the U.S. rust belt.

Obviously, the race card didn’t work so well there because of fewer minority voters. But the problem for Democrats in those areas certainly had nothing to do with “angry white voters,” as the media keeps pretending. It’s just that Clinton’s campaign didn’t really have much to talk about when she visited these areas… race-baiting wasn’t going to play as well with largely white audiences. And folks in those areas are not so much angry as they are unemployed or underemployed thanks to the failing economy.

Christ, Clinton even said that she was working on a plan to put people in those regions who depend on coal and industry to put food on the table out of a job with environmental regulations if she was elected. Why would she say that? To pander to liberal coastal elites.

So, looking at the maps, the Democrats won the race they ran. Their issues were social justice, race, the environment, etc.

They won poor, minority regions and liberal cities.

They lost lower income areas where people still remember when they could provide a comfortable life for their families working in the plant down the street.

To those voters, Trump’s campaign peddled hope; and they responded.

If anyone is angry, judging by the headlines, it’s the minority victims of the Democrats’ fearmongering campaign tactics. Right now, they think they’re mad at Trump. And for the president-elect, that provides a massive opportunity.

If he can manage to bring some economic recovery and hope to the nation’s poorest minority areas, give certain people an opportunity to put down a gun and pick up a career in a new plant, those areas will begin rethinking their devotion to the Democrats just as union workers in Ohio did.

He ran on “Make America Great Again” but Trump’s real success will be determined by the number of people he can make believe in the American Dream again.
