As of this writing, the citizens of the United States of America are (hopefully) preparing to cast their ballots for the most important election in their lifetime. The differences between the two candidates for president could not be more stark; and the real and present dangers to the USA that either presidential choice will have to face once they’ve taken the oath next January couldn’t be more dire.
On the economic front, the current national debt pledged by the government, but borne by the people, is un-repayable. The educational systems, the land use regulatory agencies, the news and entertainment media providers, the military and police forces, and much of the religious institutions have all become federal vassals. And if the Republican candidate, should he triumph and actually have ideas on how to reverse this situation, he will be battling not only against the judicial and legislative branches of the “United Government of America” and its standing bureaucracies; but he will also be battling against all the wanna-be federal dictators-in-training at the State House farm teams.
It wasn’t supposed to be like this, of course.
These United States reluctantly joined together in 1776 only because they faced a greater enemy than they could take on individually. And the continuance of that alliance was never a sure thing. In a famous example, upon leaving the Constitutional Convention hall, Benjamin Franklin was stopped by a woman who asked, “Well, doctor, what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?”
His reply to her was telling of his own real concerns: “A republic … if you can keep it.”
The United States of America only succeeded in keeping that republic for as long as it has because of three things.
First and always foremost, a belief in Nature’s God and the shared morality that belief required.
Secondly, a very simple, easily understood, and self-limiting set of bylaws called the Constitution.
And finally, the freedom for the citizens to expand beyond the boundaries of the “Nation” and establish new communities comprised of the very best of men: those who chaffed under regulation and who were brave enough to face the unknown.
This last condition was, of course, geographically limited. Once the pioneers hit the west coast, the safety valve of expansion was slowly shut down. After that, it was just a matter of time – 150 years, plus or minus – for the growing leadership and minions of the “United Government of America” to weaken and twist the hearts of men away from the freely given grace of their God, and to muddy and corrupt the simple self-evident truths cherished by our Founders into self-serving lies.
These failures were inevitable, because the hearts of men will always turn to evil unless they have God in residence there. John Adams once said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
So where are we today? Have we kept our republic? Are we a moral and religious people?
No and no.
Just a few examples:
- Today we are required by law and by threat of prosecution to accept, honor and participate in the behavior of the mentally ill, meaning those who are sexually attracted to others of their own gender and those who are so mentally unstable as to believe the only way they can pursue happiness is to have their bodies carved into a laughable parody of the opposite sex.
- Today we have government officials who lie to the public with regularity. This behavior is no longer considered reprehensible by the propagandists of the media, but is instead graded for style.
- Today many citizens mock and defame those whose primary religious tenets are to love God and their neighbor, and exalt those who believe in a god created by a child rapist and murderer; a god so weak that his followers must defend him from perceived slights by torture, fire and the sword.
- Today we have an imperial legislature who blithely supports the destruction of the family, the ruination of the states and districts they purport to represent, and the nation as a whole in pursuit of personal power.
- Today, even more than in our segregationist past, we allow whole groups of Americans to exist under separate rules and laws based solely on nebulous variations of skin color. The pernicious “racism” of moral relativism means that we allow and even encourage some humans to behave in inhuman ways because of “past inequalities.”
None of this is unusual in the history of humanity. Evil is always common. And there has always been evil because the physical Earth is the kingdom of the Prince of the Air. But only recently in His reign has this organized miasma become worldwide.
Standing against the kingdom of the world is the Kingdom of God. Initially it appears that the world is winning. It makes sense in a way. Evil is always better organized and an easier sell. And at present, the Kingdom of God on Earth can only be found in the hearts of men.
But that will soon change.
These “Practical Prepper” columns are all about common-sense ways to prepare for the coming hard times. I have and will continue to describe simple ways to feed, clothe and protect yourself and those you care for. But never forget, this life is a grain in an hour glass. Prepare for the hard times, yes. But please, please make sure that you’ve stored God’s love, mercy and grace in your heart before you put up a single bucket of wheat.
Because with God, all things are possible. Without him, nothing matters.
And this is one of the reasons we prep.
See you next week.
