A new poll shows that supporters of GOP President-elect Donald Trump and Democratic rival Hillary Clinton disagree on just about everything.
Crime? Check. Illegal aliens? Check. Sexism? Check. Even the weather, in the form of climate change.
They can’t even agree on where there might have been progress on issues in recent years. Or if there has been progress.
In fact, about the only issues they’re even close on are drug addiction and the condition of roads and bridges.
On the first, a little more than half (56 percent) of Democrats say it’s a very big problem, while 62 percent of Republicans have that opinion. On roads, it’s 36 percent for Republicans and 46 percent for Democrats.
Pew Research Center headlined the study “A Divided and Pessimistic Electorate,” and it may not bode well for elections two years or four years from now.
The national online survey was done during the two weeks leading up to Trump’s stunning election victory over Clinton.
Nearly 3,800 registered voters who said they already had voted or planned to vote were contacted by the center’s American Trends Panel.
“Among 13 issues, the gaps were fairly modest in only two – drug addictions and the condition of the the nation’s roads, bridges and other infrastructure,” Pew reported.
The divide was represented most strongly on politically hot issues such as illegal immigration. Only 20 percent of Clinton supporters said it was a problem, but 79 percent of Trump supporters did. On climate change, it was 14 percent for Trump supporters and 66 percent for Clinton supporters. And on gun violence, 31 percent for Trump supporters and 73 percent for Clinton supporters.
“Both racism and sexism were viewed as more serious problems among Clinton voters than Trump voters. About half of Clinton voters (53 percent) said racism was a major problem, and 37 percent said that about sexism. That compared with 21 percent and 7 percent, respectively, among Trump voters,” the report said.
Not only could the two sides not agree on what’s important, neither could they agree on how to address the problems.
Eight-four percent of Clinton supporters preferred a slow approach that solves problems gradually. Fifty-three percent of Trump supporters want “new approaches that may solve problems quickly, but also risk making things worse.”
One thing they did agreed on is that President Obama hasn’t accomplished much.
“Overall, relatively few voters thought the country had made progress on most issues since 2008. The economy was the only one of seven about which roughly as many voters said things had gotten better (38 percent) as worse (43 percent) over this period.”
The report said majorities of voters said race relations (67 percent), the country’s standing in the world (61 percent), crime (57 percent) and the immigration situation (55 percent) in this country had each gotten worse since 2008.
Voters, according to the survey, “had little confidence that the new Trump – or Clinton – administration would be open and transparent, improve the way government works or set a high moral standard for the presidency.”
The two sides couldn’t even agree on how to describe themselves.
“The widest gap in views between Trump and Clinton supporters was over whether the term ‘traditional’ described them. About seven-in-ten Trump voters said it did (72 percent), compared with just 31 percent of Clinton voters.
“An overwhelming share of Clinton supporters (87 percent) thought ‘open-minded’ describes them well – the most across any of the eight attributes. A smaller majority of Trump supporters (64 percent) thought the same of themselves.”
Nearly two-thirds of Trump supporters said “honor and duty” described their core values, but only about one-third of Clinton’s backers said that.
The survey also found: “Supporters also were distinct in their associations. A wide majority of Trump supporters (69 percent) said ‘supporter of the National Rifle Association’ describes them well, more than eight times the share of Clinton supporters who said the same (8 percent).
“Conversely, Clinton supporters were more than twice as likely as Trump supporters to say ‘supporter of rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people’ describes them well: A two-thirds majority of Clinton supporters said this, compared with just about a quarter (24 percent) of Trump supporters.
“Just about half (53 percent) of Clinton supporters said in the weeks before the election that ‘supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement’ describes them well, including roughly three-quarters of black voters who supported Clinton (73 percent) and about half of white voters who supported her (51 percent). By contrast, just 6 percent of Trump supporters described themselves as supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement,” the Pew report said.
