(WASHINGTON TIMES) House Democrats have delayed a vote on electing party leaders for the next Congress until the end of the month, saying they want more time to digest the shellacking they took in the 2016 election and to figure out how to strengthen their hand in future elections.
The move signaled the election has weakened House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, the California Democrat who has led the caucus since 2004 and could face a rival in the next leadership vote that is now scheduled for Nov. 30.
“This isn’t about the past election,” said Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio, who has been urged to run for a leadership post. “This is about the next election, and what do the leaders look like, what does the message sound like, in order for us to pick up the seats we need to get back into the majority.”
