Hillary: ‘Our nation more deeply divided than we thought’

HILLARY

Tuesday, the morning after she snubbed her campaign workers and millions of supporters across the U.S. by refusing to speak when Donald Trump won the presidency, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton told Americans that, “Our nation is more deeply divided than we thought.”

Giving a perfunctory acknowledgement to Trump’s victory, by a margin of 276 to 228 in the Electoral College with Alaska, Arizona, New Hampshire and Michigan still uncalled, although leaning strongly toward Trump, she said, “Last night I congratulated Donald Trump and offered to work with him. I hope he will be a successful president for all Americans.”

She said the outcome of the election was “not the outcome we wanted” and that it hurt.

“This is painful and it will be for a long time.”

But she expressed gratitude to her backers.

“You represent the best of America and being your candidate has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” she said.

She repeatedly emphasized her own campaign’s talking points: provisions for being “inclusive.” She cited the nation’s precedents for the “rule of law, the principle we are equal in rights and dignity, freedom of worship and expression.”

Also, “making the economy work for everyone, protecting our country and planet, and breaking down the barriers that hold any American back.”

“We spent a year and a half bringing together millions of people … to say with one voice we believe the American dream is big enough for everyone,” she said.

She insisted on having a “fairer” America.

She also acknowledged the debt owed by “our country” to Barack Obama, whose precedents essentially were slapped down by voters on Tuesday.

On Tuesday night, when Trump surged into the lead, Clinton decided against appearing before her campaign staff and supporters, instead dispatching campaign chief John Podesta, who said, “They’re still counting votes, and every vote should count.”

The Electoral College results have Trump with 276, above the victory level of 270. Clinton had 228, with four states still undecided, although all leaning toward Trump. They could give him a final victory margin of 306-228.

Trump won Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, South Carolina, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Alabama, Kansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, Wyoming, Arkansas, Louisiana, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, North Carolina, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Utah, Wisconsin, Iowa, Georgia and Pennsylvania.

Hillary won Vermont, Illinois, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Rhode Island, Delaware, the District of Columbia, New York, Connecticut, New Mexico, Virginia, Colorado, California, Washington, Hawaii, Oregon, Nevada, Minnesota and Maine.

“This is a modern-day political miracle that you’re witnessing before your eyes,” declared Fox News’ Sean Hannity. “America is saying, ‘Enough is enough with failed policies.’”

Trump took the stage at his New York headquarters late in the election night and declared, “I’ve just received a call from Secretary Clinton. She congratulated us – it’s about us – on our victory. And I congratulated her and her family on a very, very hard-fought campaign. She fought very hard. Hillary has worked very long and very hard over a long period of time. And we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country.”

Trump said it’s time for all Americans “to come together as one united people.”

“I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president of all Americans, and this is so important to me,” he said. “For those who have chosen not to support me in the past … I’m reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so we can unify our great country. … Ours was not a campaign but an incredible and great movement.”
