The outcome of the 2016 presidential election is already decided, despite which major party candidate takes the victory once the final vote is tallied.
The verdict? If everyone who feels they were screwed in this election cycle would kick the sh*t out of the political establishment for the next four years, there may be a chance for actual political change.
It doesn’t matter if you like him or not, Republican Donald Trump did the nation a great service by hanging on throughout the presidential primaries and fighting strong through the general election.
Why? Well, he denied the political establishment the punchline to a cruel joke on the voting public.
There’s no doubt that from the first announcement in this election, the Republican and Democratic National Committees had figured on offering up a Jeb Bush versus Hillary Clinton election.
That’s why Trump’s success in the primaries was met with such upheaval from the GOP establishment.
Trump’s bombast certainly paid off.
Democrat Bernie Sanders also deserves a little credit for his 2016 role— though WikiLeaks has revealed that he never had a chance against the Clinton campaign machine.
Sanders did, however, do to the Democratic Party what former Congressman Ron Paul did to the GOP so many years ago. That is, reveal to a generation of young voters that disruption is not out of the question.
The small crack he created will ripple through the Democratic Party in the years ahead and fundamentally weaken its ability to pick a standard-bearer of the establishment’s liking.
That’s what happened to the GOP.
Think about the size of the primary fields in this year’s election.
With no incumbent, Democrats should have been coming out of the woodwork to run for president. And they should’ve run hard.
Everyone besides Sanders and Martin O’Malley, however, gave in to Clinton’s “inevitability” over a year ago.
You probably couldn’t even name the others…
Now think about the GOP primary field in 2016… crowded with candidates who held on to the very end.
This will happen to the Democrats next time.
And with both major parties showing weakness and a growing inability to pull off that “party unity” B.S., Americans ought to begin feeling more comfortable looking for alternative options.
For third-party advocates, there’s never been a better time in American politics. But it’s going to take work. The role of alternative media will need to continue to grow. And, more importantly, the political fringe will need to be careful not to allow itself to be swallowed by the establishment in return for a little mass media exposure.
Keep yelling, keep pressuring and, as we’ve seen, the political outsiders will keep getting harder to ignore.
