Homeland Security officials are warning that Islamic terrorists may be planning attacks just before or on Election Day.
According to reports, senior FBI officials are investigating possible terror plots in New York, Texas and Virginia planned for Monday.
“The counterterrorism and homeland security communities remain vigilant and well-postured to defend against attacks here in the United States,” an FBI official said.
“The FBI, working with our federal, state and local counterparts, shares and assesses intelligence on a daily basis and will continue to work closely with law enforcement and intelligence community partners to identify and disrupt any potential threat to public safety,” the official added.
Officials say that the attacks could be ISIS or al-Qaida inspired.
In addition, law enforcement officials throughout the country have reportedly been told to be on the lookout for possible lone wolf attacks on U.S. polling sites Tuesday.
Another concern is that hackers could launch cyberattacks against U.S. election systems on Tuesday, causing confusion and mass chaos.
Several Silicon Valley experts have warned that there’s already evidence that hackers have explored options for disrupting election systems.
Adam D’Angelo, Facebook’s former chief technology officer, said via Twitter: “Hackers have already shown (a) they’re probing internet defenses and (b) a willingness to tamper with the election. Scary thought.”
