Bill Clinton
Former president Bill Clinton has said the life expectancy for some “middle-aged, non-college-educated white Americans” is dropping.
And it’s because, he explains, under years of the Barack Obama administration, “they don’t have anything to look forward to when they get up in the morning.”
The comments undermine Hillary Clinton’s repeated insistence, intended to counter GOP candidate Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan, that America still is an “exceptional nation.”
Bill Clinton’s statements were uncovered by the Daily Caller from a behind-closed-doors fundraiser speech late last year.
In Canton, Ohio, raising money for his wife’s presidential bid, he echoed Trump’s theme of optimism about America’s future.
“It’s a serious time in ways that even sometimes the Democrats don’t notice,” he said.
“We had a debate a few days ago, right. And I was proud of how Hillary and Gov. O’Malley and Sen. Sanders did, because their differences were about how best to accomplish things that need to be done,” he said. “But even there, the number one story of the week, which you will identify with in Ohio, in a Democratic debate was never mentioned: 84 percent of the American people, after inflation, had not had a raise of 1 cent since the financial crash.”
He was referencing the market collapse that ushered in Obama’s first term.
“We have incredible debates all over America that shouldn’t exist between people in different racial groups because they don’t trust law enforcement anymore. And in the middle of all this we learned, breathtakingly, that middle-aged, non-college-educated white Americans’ life expectancy is going down and is now lower than Hispanics, even though they make less money.
He continued, “And the gap between African Americans and whites is closing, but unfortunately not because the death rate among African Americans is dropping but because the death rate among white Americans is rising.
“Why? Because they don’t have anything to look forward to when they get up in the morning. Because their lives are sort of stuck in neutral,” he said.
The Daily Caller said the “economic stagnancy of the Obama years is to blame for plummeting life expectancy rates among white, working-class Americans, according to former president Bill Clinton.”
It described Bill Clinton as “echoing a theme of Republican nominee Donald Trump’s campaign.”
