The NBA is threatening to move its All-Star game from Charlotte, N.C., due to that state’s passage of a bill perceived by the association as discriminatory to LGBTs.
The NBA issued a sharp rebuke to North Carolina over its passage of a bill that bars localities from providing special anti-discrimination protections to LBGTs, and threatened in a letter: We may play our 2017 All-Star Game elsewhere.
In a tweet, the NBA expressed “concern that this discriminatory law runs counter to our guiding principles of equality and mutual respect,” Fox News reported.
The NBA also said in a statement the governor’s passage of the law could have an impact on where the association chooses to play its 2017 All-Star Game, currently slated for Charlotte.
“The NBA is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment to all who attend our games and event,” the association also said.

The bill signed into law by Gov. Patrick McCrory basically prohibits any locality from passing ordinances giving special anti-discrimination protections to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens. The bill came on the heels of a Charlotte ordinance passed into law, and due to take effect April 1, by Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts that strengthened protections for LGBTs and gave them the right to use public restrooms that corresponded with their chosen or adopted gender.
Critics said the measure afforded special rights to a select class of citizens. And McCrory said it would have violated the “basic expectation of privacy in the most intimate of settings,” and that it represented a clear example of “government overreach and intrusion,” Fox News reported.
The NBA didn’t say when it would decide on the location of its 2017 game, or whether the state’s new bill would definitely rule out Charlotte.
