In an interview hours before the Iowa caucuses are set to begin, Republican presidential primary front-runner Donald Trump told talk-radio host Michael Savage that while Iowa has not picked the eventual nominee in 16 years, a win would be “psychologically” important to his campaign.
Trump noted that in New Hampshire, which holds its primary Feb. 9, he has a 28-point lead in at least one poll.
“That sounds like an incumbent president running against nobody,” he remarked to Savage.
Trump – who in Iowa leads by one point over Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, in the latest Emerson poll and by seven points in the latest Quinnipiac – said one of the benefits of the caucus system is that it “makes you work harder.”
Asked if he had ever worked so hard in his life, the real-estate billionaire said his presidential campaign “is right up there.”
“This is tougher than a building in Manhattan,” he said. “But it’s a great process. I’m encouraged when I look at the polls.”
Trump, a frequent guest on “The Savage Nation,” discussed with Savage last Tuesday the backlash against migrants in Europe, noting he has called for a freeze on immigration of Muslims in the United States until a coherent and effective strategy for dealing with Islamic extremists becomes official U.S. policy.
Along with leading nationally, and in Iowa and New Hampshire, polls have Trump ahead in the next two states on the schedule, South Carolina and Nevada.
Hillary may not ‘be able to run’
Warning of the prospect of another four years of President Obama’s agenda, he expressed doubt about Democrat front-runner Hillary Clinton getting the nomination, particularly because of the FBI investigation of her mishandling of classified information through a personal email server.
“I don’t know if Hillary is going to be able to run, with the things that are coming down now with the FBI and with what she’s done,” he said. “I don’t know that she’s going to be able to run, to be honest with you.”
He also pointed to a new poll that has her behind in Iowa. A Quinnipiac survey shows self-declared democratic socialist Bernie Sanders ahead 49 to 46.
“That would be a big loss for her,” Trump said.
In New Hampshire, Sanders leads by as many as 31 points.

Demographic advantage
Savage asked Trump about his advantage over other Republican candidates in attracting certain demographics, such as Hispanics, that have tended to vote for Democrats.
Trump affirmed the importance of winning over Democrats, because the Democratic Party has a “structural advantage,” with more members than the Republican Party.
And he pointed out that polls show he has a chance to win states that have been virtual locks for Democrats.
“I have a chance of getting New York. I have a chance of getting Michigan. I have a chance of getting states that a lot of these people, these other (Republican) candidates, it would never be a possibility to get them,” he said.
“We’re going to do great in Ohio and Florida and other places,” he said, naming also Virginia and West Virginia.
“Places that have not been good to the Republicans, Trump is going to win. And if that happens, you end up having a tremendous advantage,” he said.
Savage asked Trump what message he would like to leave “The Savage Nation” before the Iowa vote.
“I think only, Michael, that I’ve been working very hard. I’ve spent a lot of time out here. I’ve spent a lot of time in all the different places – New Hampshire, the next after that would be South Carolina – all amazing places,” he said.
“But I will tell you this, the people of this country – and you’ve know this better than anybody – the people of this country are incredible. More than anything else, that’s what I’ve found.
“You have to see the love for this country. The people are incredible.”
Savage concluded by noting to Trump that “The Savage Nation” message of “borders, language and culture” essentially has been the message of the Trump campaign.
“That’s why I’m 100 percent behind you, as are my listeners,” Savage said.
Trump replied: “You’re right. We are going to have very, very strong borders. Those days are over where people just flow into the country like water. It’s not going to happen that way.
