Hillary Clinton got caught in a bizarre lie over the weekend when she claimed a voter gave her the “best” defense of her email scandal to date within the last 24 hours.
The former secretary of state sang the praises of a quick-witted voter on Sunday during an interview in Iowa. Fox News thought the story Clinton was trumpeting sounded familiar and soon found out why: She told the same story three weeks ago during a meeting with the editorial board of the Des Moines Register.
“The best explanation I heard of this I heard yesterday in Des Moines from a man I was shaking hands with,” Clinton told Iowa’s WHO-TV on Sunday. “He said, ‘This is like you drive through the same intersection for four years and the speed limit is 35 and then you move out of town and they change the speed limit to 25. And then they start sending tickets to people who drove while the speed limit was 35 over 25.’”
Footage aired by Fox soon afterward showed Clinton was needlessly lying.
Clinton told the Iowa Register three weeks ago: “You know it’d be like somebody in the Department of Transportation setting speed limits that had cameras where cars were going down a road, and pictures of license plates were being taken and let’s say the speed limit was 35. And then retroactively the police say that speed limit should’ve been 25, so let’s go back and look at anybody who drove down that road and exceeded 25.”
Fox’s senior White House correspondent Ed Henry looked at host Megyn Kelly on Sunday and said, “This gives you an idea of one of the reasons why this whole question of trust, being honest has dogged her throughout the campaign.”
“Is any other network going to fact-check her on that?” asked Kelly. “People are laughing. … It’s obvious what happened.”

The conservative website Hotair said Monday that to believe Clinton was not lying would require voters to say “the woman is so addled that she can’t even recall a conversation she had in the past few weeks with the biggest paper in the state where she’s currently running in a heated race.”
The FBI is trying to determine whether Clinton violated a subsection of the Espionage Act related to “gross negligence” in handling government documents by using a personal email server as secretary of state. Agents are also attempting to discern whether co-mingling of the Clinton Foundation and State Department business violated public corruption laws.
Last Friday the Obama administration admitted for the first time that Clinton’s personal email server contained the highest levels of classified U.S. intelligence. The White House said 22 emails from her “home brew” alternative must be censored from public.
Sources told Fox on Friday the withheld emails were “too damaging” to release under any circumstances.
“The documents alone in and of themselves set forth a set of compelling, articulable facts that statutes relating to espionage have been violated,” a former senior federal law enforcement officer said.
