You won’t believe these ‘Federal Fumbles’

Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) and a handful of congressional budget hawks have produced a list of 100 ridiculous ways the federal government is wasting your money right now.

According to Lankford, his “Federal Fumbles” report provides perfect examples of why the vast federal bureaucracy shouldn’t be trusted to spend American tax dollars wisely.

“The fumble book that we have isn’t just waste. It’s also areas where the federal government has violated its trust responsibilities. Wasting taxpayer dollars. Programs that are rife with fraud. Duplications and inefficiency. Overregulating that raises the cost of goods and services for the consumer,” he said.

Some of the stupidest examples of government waste this year include:

  • A $375,000 National Science Foundation grant to study the dating habits of senior citizens
  • $200,000 spent by the National Endowment for the Arts for wordless adaptations of Shakespeare plays
  • $283,500 spent by the Pentagon to study a small bird
  • $1.2 million spent by the National Science Foundation to teach robots how to select outfit combinations and dress children and the elderly
  • $250 million to train only 60 Syrian rebels to fight ISIS — that’s $4 million per rebel

These are all examples of ways big government is failing American taxpayers.

In total, Lankford and his staff singled out 100 examples of government waste spanning $105 billion in spending and $800 billion in regulatory burdens.
