Trump on top again as Carson fades

Donald Trump, once again, has emerged in the top spot of presidential candidates in the Republican primary, according to a just-released poll from Quinnipiac University testing the national political winds.

But the bigger news is former neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who has enjoyed some surging favor among voters in recent weeks – along with a second–place spot to Trump’s lead in some polls – has fallen to third. Now, Sen. Marco Rubio is seeing a surge and his numbers, at 17 percent, put him in second to Trump, at 27 percent.

Carson now comes in with 16 percent, along with Sen. Ted Cruz.

The more establishment Republican candidate, Jeb Bush, is only garnering 5 percentage points. And all other Republican candidates, including once surging Carly Fiorina, come in with less than 3 percentage points.

Just last month, Quinnipiac put Trump and Carson in a virtual tie on the national front.

Do you support Donald Trump’s no-nonsense candidacy? Tell the world with this brand new magnetic bumper sticker: “DONALD TRUMPS THE REST”

“It doesn’t seem to matter what he says or who he offends, whether the facts are contested or the ‘political correctness’ is challenged, Donald Trump seems to be wearing Kevlar,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll, in a statement reported by CBS News. “The GOP, 11 months from the election, has to be thinking, ‘This could be the guy.’”

The poll was conducted between Nov. 23 and Nov. 30, with a 3.8 percent margin of error for Republicans and 2.6 percent margin of error for voters nationwide. The margin of error for Democrats is 4.1 percent.

And among its findings: voters still prefer Hillary Clinton to any of the Republican candidates. In a matchup of Trump and Clinton, the former secretary of state wins 47 percent to 41 percent. But against Rubio, Clinton barely bests, winning by the slim 45 percent to 44 percent.
