Florida Sen. Marco Rubio’s top adviser huddled with donors in New York this week and prepared them for a path to the Republican presidential nomination involving a brokered convention.

Attendees at a Manhattan meeting on Wednesday told CNN that Terry Sullivan gave a presentation involving two paths to victory. The individuals, who asked to remain anonymous, said they were given two scenarios that are likely to unfold before July’s Republican convention:

  • Anti-Trump factions coalesce around Rubio and he uses that momentum to win the nomination.
  • Rubio fights for the nomination at a brokered convention when none of the candidates receive a simple majority.

Wednesday’s meeting came one day that Donald Trump handily came in first place in Nevada’s caucus. The billionaire, who also won in New Hampshire and South Carolina, secured 45.9 percent of the vote.

CNN’s two sources said roughly 200 people attended the meeting, including former supporters of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. Ex-bundlers and donors for Bush sought reassurance that their money would not be wasted on another candidate.

“They wanted to know that we on the Rubio side are going to be good stewards,” the network’s source said.

Bush’s donors have good reason to worry. Right to Rise, the losing candidate’s super PAC, wasted $100 million on his behalf. His campaign raised $31 million through Jan. 31, only to finish sixth, fourth and fourth in the first three Republican contests.

Sullivan and Rubio spokesman Alex Conant declined to comment for CNN’s story.

Rubio, Trump and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz will face off tonight in Texas in a debate hosted by CNN, Telemundo and Salem Radio. The event, which will be held at the University of Houston, will be broadcast in English and Spanish.
