Five commanders with Iran’s naval Islamic Revolution Guards Corps were given medals for capturing and keeping 10 U.S. sailors hostage for several hours.
Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, presented the awards to the group over the weekend. The circumstances leading to the capture of the nine male and one female U.S. sailors are still unknown. Iran said the two boats they were navigating drifted into Iranian waters.
“The evidence suggests that they unintentionally entered the Iranian waters because of the failure of their navigational system.” said Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps spokesman Ramazan Sharif, in CNN.
The sailors were photographed and filmed and the images were sent out around the world as part of Iran’s propaganda efforts. The female sailor, meanwhile, was forced to wear a head covering, in line with Muslim standards for women.

The members of the Revolutionary Gard were given the Faith Victory medal, one of the highest honors that can be given by Iran’s supreme leader, CNN reported.
Khamenei said the commanders were “brave,” and the capture of the sailors “was in fact an act of God, who brought the Americans into our waters so they would be arrested with their hands on their heads through your timely measure,” Iran’s state-run Press TV reported.
