The Super Bowl sometimes has a long shadow. Players’ contracts often are affected in major ways based on their results in the biggest NFL game of the season. And just ask the advertisers who are willing to spend millions for a few seconds promoting their products.
It seems the ripples from the half-time show also can run on.
Especially this year, after Beyoncé was accused of dressing up in tribute to the Black Panther Party, which is known for its confrontations with police, and in honor of the Black Lives Matter movement, which has distinctly anti-police overtones.
Some police unions have simply said their members won’t be putting up with her message.
One of the ripples has been that police officers have refused to volunteer to protect the controversial pop star.
And that resulted in an unexpected and very controversial figure stepping forward to offer security – Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.
The book Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton don’t want you to read. Check out “The Antidote” in the WND Superstore.
Farrakhan mocked Rudy Giuliani and other leaders who condemned Beyoncé’s Super Bowl half-time recognition of the Black Panthers. He also made an odd reference to “white folks” pushing education about the Holocaust while supposedly cracking down on any of that “black talk.”
“Look at how you treating Beyoncé now,” thundered Farrakhan. “You gonna picket, you not gonna offer her police protection – but the FOI will.”
The “FOI” is the Fruit of Islam, the Nation of Islam’s paramilitary security force. Farrakhan’s promise led to thunderous applause from the assembled crowd of Nation of Islam followers.
But Jesse Lee Peterson, a black civil rights leader, WND columnist and author of “The Antidote,” blasted Farrakhan and called for Beyoncé to disavow the group.
“Louis Farrakhan is a bigot, and he always supports and embraces people who promote an anti-American and anti-police message,” said Peterson. “Farrakhan detests America, and he hates whites and Jews. He has a long history of siding with black thugs and criminals against the police.
“If Beyoncé had any decency, she would tell Farrakhan that she doesn’t need his protection and apologize for her anti-police, anti-white performance and video. Instead of attacking police that protect her during her tours and concerts, she should be protesting hate groups like NOI and Black Lives Matter. These black hate groups are a far greater threat to blacks than white police have ever been.”
Peterson also described Farrakhan as a hypocrite. In 2015, Farrakhan called on rap mogul Jay Z, Beyoncé’s husband, to ensure she is “beautifully covered” instead of putting his wife “on display.”
He asked Jay Z rhetorically, “Do you want men looking at your woman, being tempted by your woman, to make advances at your woman?
“You’re responsible,” Farrakhan said of Jay Z and his relationship with Beyoncé, who was a registered Republican at least until about 2006, or about the time Obama came on the political scene, when she gained publicity by singing at his inauguration.
She’s reported she hosts fundraisers for Obama, but Breitbart reported she “has never denied she goes home and votes for the GOP.”
“I’m wondering if some of the $1.5 million that Jay Z recently gave to Black Lives Matter and other ‘social justice’ organizations has trickled down to his Nation of Islam – maybe that’s why he’s changed his tone and is now defending Beyoncé,” Peterson suggested.
Peterson called the involvement of the Nation of Islam ominous because he believes radical movements are becoming more prevalent in the black community.
“The media, black preachers and liberal Democrat politicians are encouraging it,” said Peterson. “There are only a handful of brave black souls who speak out boldly against evil black ‘leaders’ like Farrakhan and foolish entertainers like Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé and others. Therefore, there is little opposition preventing their lies from reaching the black community and poisoning the hearts and minds of black youth.”
Another black leader speaking out on the issue is Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke.
He called for Beyoncé to renounce Farrakhan’s support and accused Farrakhan of being someone who “spews hate [and] racism” as well as anti-Semitism.
He also accused Farrakhan of calling for an army to kill white people.
“If Lucifer had a son, it would be Louis Farrakhan,” Clarke said. He also mocked the Nation of Islam leader for requesting police protection when Farrakhan held an event in Milwaukee.
But Colin Flaherty, who chronicled nationwide black-on-white violence in his book, “White Girl Bleed A Lot,” argues the Nation of Islam shouldn’t be considered a fringe group anymore.
“Most people are unaware of how popular the Nation of Islam already is,” Flaherty told WND. “How they command respect in the halls of power in black communities around the country. Most white people are also unaware of how black resentment and hostility toward white people is now mainstream. So the Nation of Islam is not a fringe group, but they are admired and supported by many black people, even if they do not follow its religious tenets.”
A 2010 report from Aaron Klein revealed even President Obama is connected with the group, with Obama former pastor Jeremiah Wright repeatedly involved in Farrakhan’s initiatives.
Thus, Flaherty doesn’t expect Beyoncé to be denouncing the Nation of Islam anytime soon. He also observed her husband, Jay Z, has publicly worn a medallion with the logo of the Five Percent Nation, a radical offshoot of the Nation of Islam.
But Flaherty suggested if Beyoncé actually believed in her Black Lives Matter rhetoric, she shouldn’t want police protection anyway.
“I’m not quite sure why Beyoncé even needs security,” he deadpanned. “Any Black Lives Matter activist can tell you police cause violence, not solve it. Perhaps Beyoncé should put her rhetoric to the test. Show the world that it is possible to gather tens of thousands of black people in the same place at the same time and have a ‘largely peaceful’ event. I myself look forward to reading about it, and not testing this theory in person.”
