Kaine says he’s proud to be labeled an enemy of gun rights

Hillary Clinton running mate Tim Kaine claimed to be a “strong 2nd Amendment supporter” during the Tuesday vice presidential debate. But when the National Rifle Association pointed out that his record says otherwise Kaine said he’s proud of his support for overreaching gun control.

“I’m a gun owner, I’m a strong Second Amendment supporter, but I’ve got a lot of scar tissue because when I was governor of Virginia there was a horrible shooting at Virginia Tech,” Kaine said during the debate.

The candidate went on the claim that Democratic gun control proposals could have prevented some of those tragedies, saying: “And we learned that, through that painful situation, that gaps in the background record system should have been closed and that could have prevented that crime. So we’re going work to do things like close background record checks and if we do, we won’t have the tragedies that we did.”

The NRA took issue with the VP candidate’s claim that he’s a 2nd Amendment supporter, tweeting that Kaine was, “Perennially “F” rated by the #NRA during his tenure at both the state and federal levels…”

Kaine on Wednesday said the NRA’s poor ratings are a compliment.

“And proud of it,” he responded to the organization’s tweet.

According to the NRA, it’s just more evidence that single-issue 2nd Amendment voters have the most to lose in the 2016 election.

Late last month, NRA top lobbyist Chris Cox said it’s clear that Kaine’s “anti-gun bona fides are ironclad.”

He wrote on the NRA website: “[M]ake no mistake, if pro-gun voters buy into the Clinton/Kaine act this November, they might never get another chance to get it right. The next president will decide whether we have a Supreme Court that does or does not believe in the Second Amendment.

“And Hillary Clinton, Tim Kaine and the Democratic Party machine have made their position unmistakably clear.”
