Just after reports that Russia is conducting massive drills to test its ability to protect citizens from Western attacks, U.S. Army leaders are warning that a conflict between the U.S. and Russia or China would mean rapid and massive bloodshed.
Lt. Gen. Joseph Anderson, Army deputy chief of staff for operations, told a future-of-the-Army panel that military technological advancements mean future warfare will move at a faster pace than ever before.
Anderson and other top military officials are also warning that Americans should brace for conflicts against “modern nation-states acting aggressively in militarized competition,” meaning the U.S. could be in for a type of all-out warfare the country hasn’t experienced in decades.
According to Maj. Gen. William Hix, Anderson’s deputy, the Pentagon is currently planning to confront “violence on the scale that the U.S. Army has not seen since Korea.”
“A conventional conflict in the near future will be extremely lethal and fast. And we will not own the stopwatch,” he said.
The military leader predicts that the speed and deadliness of armed conflict will increase more rapidly as the number of autonomous weapons on the battlefield grows.
“The speed of events are likely to strain our human abilities,” Hix said. “The speed at which machines can make decisions in the far future is likely to challenge our ability to cope, demanding a new relationship between man and machine.”
