An investigation has been launched in Colorado into either the most unscrupulous, crooked, evil profiteers ever. Or someone who saw an open door for free enterprise and jumped through.
It seems someone has been making appointments with the state Department of Motor Vehicles and then reselling those appointments for up to $1,000.
Attorney General Cynthia Coffman herself issued a warning:
“Our office received information from the DMV that a number of people were hoarding appointment times and then selling those appointments at prices that range from $50 to as high as $1,000,” she said.
“We need people who have been victimized to come forward so we can identify these unscrupulous individuals and businesses who are profiting from a free government service. Anyone engaged in this scam should cease their activity and immediately cancel any scheduled appointments they’ve reserved.”
She said she’s working in cooperation with the DMV at the Colorado Department of Revenue on the investigation.
The appointments are under the Colorado Road and Community Safety Act, and Coffman said part of the investigation is whether the activities actually violate the law.
The program allows aliens of any legal status who live and pay taxes in Colorado to get a state driver’s license or ID.
The IDs only can be obtained at one of three DMV locations.
“Applicants must make an appointment in advance through the DMV’s on-line scheduler and then appear at one of these locations. The DMV does not charge for making these appointments,” her announcement said.
She said, “Consumers who have ‘purchased’ an appointment with the DMV for a driver’s license from another individual or business should file a formal complaint with the attorney general … ”
The appointments can be obtained for free online, she said.
